Back in 2014 our friend Ryan wanted to take a "walk in the woods."  But it wasn't as simple as heading out the door.  Five close friends decided we were going to find a way for him to get back to "hitting the trails."

Ryan Deroche was an avid mountain biker.  in March of 2011 he was involved in a tragic bike accident that resulted in a Cervical spinal cord injury that affected the use of all of his muscles from the neck down.  His mission to get back on the trails turned into the inspiration for the Knobby Tire Ride and Roll.

Our first time out was in The Fells in September of 2014 with a crude set-up of a Terra Trek, some ropes, and some muscles.  It was a bumpy ride for Ry, but worth the effort.  Ry was so pumped to get back out into nature, and onto the trails that he knew so well from his time on his mountain bike.  We took another stab at it in Harold Parker with a group of friends in October of that year, and this started the wheels turning.  Ry started looking into what type of device would let him get back on the trails independently, which is when he found the BOMA.

Ry didn't have a chance to trial the BOMA before he bought it, but he was convinced it was what would work for him.  He raised over $10,000 to make this dream a reality, and once he got the BOMA, realized that it was all worth it.  Ry now can take the trails under his own power with the help of the BOMA.  During this process we realized just how challenging, and how rewarding, it could be to help someone find the right equipment that would allow them to get back out into nature.  We decided we wanted to create an event that would make it easy for others to get back out there, and we developed the Knobby Tire Ride and Roll.

Our focus now

Our first Knobby Tire Ride and Roll was in 2015, and we are excited to bring yet another year of opportunity and excellence to the Greater Boston trail-riding community of all ability levels.
